Join the Tri-Cities Meshtastic Network

Meshtastic is a low-power, long-range communication system that lets you send text messages and basic data without needing cell service or Wi-Fi. It’s easy to get started, and by setting up a node, you’ll help expand coverage across Kingsport, Johnson City, and Bristol.

This guide will walk you through choosing the right hardware, setting up your node, and connecting to the network.

Step 1: Get Your Hardware

To join the network, you’ll need a LoRa (Long Range) radio device that runs Meshtastic firmware. There are a few options to choose from, depending on your needs.

Recommended Devices

  • LilyGO T-Echo – Small, all-in-one with a built-in screen and battery. Great for portable use.
  • LilyGO T-Beam – Long battery life, built-in GPS, and great for mobile or stationary use.
  • Heltec V3 LoRa Boards – Compact, low-power, and great for DIY setups.
  • RAK Wireless Modules – Great for building high-performance, solar-powered relay nodes.

Where to Buy: These devices are available on Amazon, AliExpress, or RAK Wireless' official site.

Step 2: Flash the Meshtastic Firmware

Your device needs to run the Meshtastic firmware to work with the network.

  1. Download the Meshtastic Flasher – Go to Meshtastic.org and download the latest firmware for your device.
  2. Install Meshtastic on Your Device – Connect your device to your computer via USB and use the Meshtastic Flasher tool to install the firmware.
  3. Connect to the Meshtastic App – Download the Meshtastic app (available for Android, iOS, and Desktop) and connect to your device via Bluetooth or USB.

Step 3: Configure Your Node

Once your device is running Meshtastic, you’ll need to adjust a few settings to connect to the Tri-Cities network.

Basic Settings

  • Set the correct LoRa region – Use US 915 MHz for the United States.
  • Choose your device name – This helps others see your node on the network.
  • Enable Meshtastic channels – Join the default chat or add a custom channel for your group.

Step 4: Deploy Your Node

Decide whether you want a mobile node (for hiking, biking, and personal use) or a fixed relay node (to boost network coverage).

Mobile Node (Personal Use)

  • Charge your battery or use a USB power bank.
  • Carry your Meshtastic device in your backpack or vehicle.
  • Communicate with other users in range!

Fixed Node (Expanding the Network)

  • Find a good location – High elevation or clear line-of-sight improves range.
  • Power options – Use a USB adapter, solar panel, or external battery for 24/7 uptime.
  • Weatherproofing – Place the device in a waterproof case if mounted outdoors.

Step 5: Start Communicating!

Once your node is set up, you can:

  • Chat with others on the network using the Meshtastic app.
  • Send messages in remote areas with no cell coverage.
  • Help relay messages for others, increasing network reliability.
  • Track your location (if GPS-enabled) and share it with friends.

Want to Do More?

  • Host a high-altitude relay – If you have access to a tall building, mountain, or tower, your node can greatly improve coverage.
  • Help with expansion – Donate gear, power a node, or assist with network testing.
  • Join our community – Share your setup, get help, and discuss improvements!
