Connecting the Tri-Cities with Meshtastic

M-POWERED

Bringing Decentralized Communication to the Tri-Cities

The Tri-Cities Meshtastic Network is a grassroots effort to create a long-range, off-grid communication system across Kingsport, Johnson City, and Bristol using Meshtastic. Our goal is to build a resilient, community-driven network that allows people to send text messages and basic data without relying on cellular networks, internet connections, or traditional infrastructure. Right now, we have a small but growing network near downtown Kingsport, and we’re working to expand across the region. We recently placed a node on Bay’s Mountain, which will soon be fully operational, significantly improving coverage and reach. But to truly build a reliable, wide-area mesh network, we need more people to get involved.

Why Get Involved?

  • Emergency Preparedness - Meshtastic provides a backup communication system in case of power outages, cell network failures, or disasters. Stay connected when it matters most.
  • Community-Driven & Decentralized - There’s no central server or authority controlling the network. It’s powered by the people, for the people.
  • No Monthly Fees - Unlike cell phone plans or internet providers, Meshtastic is free to use after purchasing a low-cost node.
  • Long-Range Communication - With the right setup, messages can travel miles, and with more participants, the network only gets stronger.
  • Hobbyist & Experimentation Friendly - If you enjoy tinkering with technology, radios, or networking, Meshtastic is an exciting way to experiment with LoRa (Long Range) communication.

How Can You Help?

  • Set up your own node - A small, affordable LoRa radio can extend the network’s range.
  • Host a relay node - If you have a good location with access to power, your node can act as a bridge, strengthening coverage.
  • Spread the word -The more people involved, the stronger and more reliable the network becomes.
